Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
  2. Add warm water and olive oil, then knead the dough until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Meanwhile, prepare the apple filling by mixing diced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice.
  5. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 6 equal portions.
  6. Flatten each portion, spoon apple filling in the center, and pinch dough edges to seal, then shape into a bagel with a hole in the middle.
  7. Let shaped bagels rest for 15 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  9. Boil each bagel for 1 minute on each side, then place on a baking sheet.
  10. Brush bagels with beaten egg and melted butter for shine and flavor.
  11. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

For extra crunch, sprinkle the bagels with coarse sugar before baking or serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a decadent dessert twist.
