Baked Mac and Cheese Recipe

This baked mac and cheese recipe is the ultimate comfort food! Creamy, cheesy, and topped with a crispy breadcrumb crust, it’s perfect for a weeknight dinner or special occasion.

  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly.
  4. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in cheddar cheese and Gruyere cheese until melted and smooth.
  6. Stir in cooked macaroni. Pour into prepared baking dish.
  7. In a small bowl, combine bread crumbs and melted butter. Sprinkle over macaroni and cheese.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.
  9. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For an extra crispy topping, broil for the last 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to avoid burning.
