  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 4 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a 9-inch round cake pan, melt 6 tablespoons of butter over medium heat on the stovetop or in the oven.
  3. Stir in brown sugar and heavy cream until smooth. Cook for 1-2 minutes until slightly thickened, stirring constantly.
  4. Arrange apple slices evenly over the caramel mixture.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  6. In another bowl, cream together granulated sugar and 1/4 cup softened butter until light and fluffy.
  7. Beat in egg, then gradually add dry ingredients alternately with milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Stir in vanilla extract.
  8. Pour batter evenly over apples in the cake pan.
  9. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes before inverting onto a serving plate.
  11. Serve warm.
