Char Siu Chicken

Char Siu Chicken features tender chicken marinated in a sweet and savory Chinese barbecue sauce, delivering a flavorful and aromatic dish perfect for dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tbsp rice wine or dry sherry
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • Red food coloring (optional for traditional color)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, Chinese five-spice powder, rice wine, oyster sauce, garlic, ginger, and food coloring if using.
  2. Add the chicken thighs to the marinade, ensuring they are well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best flavor.
  3. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with foil and place a wire rack on top.
  4. Arrange the marinated chicken thighs on the rack, reserving the marinade.
  5. Bake for 20 minutes, basting occasionally with the reserved marinade.
  6. Turn on the broiler and broil the chicken for 3-5 minutes until edges are slightly charred, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  7. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For extra smoky flavor, try grilling the chicken over charcoal instead of baking. Serve with steamed rice and sautéed greens for a complete meal.
