Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Butter or oil for greasing muffin pan
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, warmed milk, and vanilla extract.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 4–6 hours or until doubled in size.
  7. Roll the dough out into a large rectangle, sprinkle evenly with chocolate chips, and roll tightly into a log.
  8. Slice the log into 12 equal pieces and place each piece into a greased muffin tin, cut side up.
  9. Let the dough rise again for about 1 hour until puffy.
  10. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the cruffins for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Remove from oven, allow to cool slightly, and dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

For extra indulgence, serve warm with a drizzle of melted chocolate or a spread of butter.
