Cranberry Orange Scones

These Cranberry Orange Scones are the perfect treat for breakfast or brunch. Bursting with bright citrus and tart cranberry flavors, they are tender, flaky, and incredibly delicious.

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 orange, zest and juice
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • Turbinado sugar, for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the dried cranberries and orange zest.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, orange juice, and egg.
  6. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a 1-inch thick circle.
  8. Cut the circle into 8 wedges.
  9. Place the scones onto the prepared baking sheet.
  10. Brush the tops of the scones with a little extra buttermilk and sprinkle with turbinado sugar.
  11. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. Let cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with clotted cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra special treat.
