This French Toast Bake is a warm, comforting breakfast casserole made with layers of bread soaked in a rich custard, baked to golden perfection. Perfect for festive mornings or weekend brunches.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (about 1 lb) of brioche or thick-cut bread, cubed
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter for greasing the baking dish
  • Powdered sugar and maple syrup for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Butter a 9×13-inch baking dish generously.
  2. Place the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing the bread down gently to soak.
  5. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Remove the plastic wrap and bake the French toast bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  8. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup if desired.

Notes

For a richer flavor, add a handful of fresh berries or chopped nuts on top before baking. Serve warm with your favorite syrup or a dollop of whipped cream.
