Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Food coloring (red and pink)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
  4. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients, alternating with buttermilk to achieve a soft dough consistency.
  5. Roll out dough on a floured surface to ¼-inch thickness. Cut into heart shapes using a cookie cutter.
  6. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheets.
  7. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are just starting to brown; remove from oven and cool on wire racks.
  8. To make frosting, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Divide and tint with food coloring as desired.
  9. Once cookies are completely cooled, spread or pipe frosting onto each cookie. Allow frosting to set before serving.

Notes

For extra decoration, add sprinkles or edible glitter on top of the frosting before it sets.
