Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and 2 tablespoons of sugar.
  2. Cut in the shortening using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add the warm water, mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Cover the dough with a clean towel and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
  6. In a shallow dish, combine the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar and cinnamon.
  7. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Divide the dough into small balls (about 1 inch in diameter).
  9. On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a thin circle (about 5-6 inches in diameter).
  10. Carefully place the buñuelos in the hot oil, one or two at a time, and fry for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  11. Remove the buñuelos with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  12. While still warm, dredge each buñuelo in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  13. Serve immediately and enjoy!
