Hot Buttered Rum

Warm up on a chilly evening with this classic Hot Buttered Rum. A rich and comforting blend of spices, butter, rum, and hot water, it’s the perfect cozy cocktail.

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 ounces dark rum
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Optional: Whipped cream and cinnamon stick for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until smooth.
  2. Stir in the cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt until well combined. This is your buttered rum batter.
  3. Place 2 tablespoons of the buttered rum batter into a mug.
  4. Pour the dark rum into the mug.
  5. Top with boiling water and stir until the buttered rum batter is melted and the drink is well combined.
  6. Optional: Garnish with whipped cream and a cinnamon stick. Serve immediately.

Notes

For an extra layer of flavor, add a splash of vanilla extract to the buttered rum batter. You can also make a large batch of the batter ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to a week.
