  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons freshly grated orange zest
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ground cloves, salt, and cinnamon if using.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the egg, orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and beat until well combined.
  5. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  6. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass or your palm.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  9. Remove from the oven and allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
