  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and cocoa powder; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. Mix in the red food coloring and vanilla extract.
  6. Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture; mix until just combined.
  7. Stir in the white vinegar gently.
  8. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness.
  9. Use a bear-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
  10. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges are set.
  11. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For an extra festive touch, decorate the cooled cookies with cream cheese frosting or sprinkle with powdered sugar.
