Scalloped Potatoes

Scalloped Potatoes are tender, thinly sliced potatoes baked in a creamy, cheesy sauce, making for a comforting and classic side dish perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden, whisking constantly.
  3. Slowly add milk, whisking continuously, and cook until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in cheddar cheese, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and nutmeg until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth.
  5. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer in the prepared dish.
  6. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  7. Repeat layering with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  8. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese evenly on top.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  10. Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

For a crispy topping, add breadcrumbs mixed with melted butter before the final 20 minutes of baking.
