Southern Cornbread

Classic Southern Cornbread features a moist, crumbly texture with a golden crust, perfect for pairing with hearty stews or enjoying on its own.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup melted butter or vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and grease an 8-inch square baking pan or cast-iron skillet.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat eggs and then stir in buttermilk and melted butter until combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let cool slightly before slicing and serving warm.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding a cup of fresh corn kernels or diced jalapeños to the batter before baking.
