Southern turnip greens recipe

This Southern turnip greens recipe delivers tender, flavorful greens simmered with smoked ham hock for a classic comfort food experience. Enjoy this traditional dish as a side or main course.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds fresh turnip greens, washed and chopped
  • 1 smoked ham hock
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the turnip greens thoroughly to remove any dirt or grit. Chop into bite-sized pieces.
  2. In a large pot or Dutch oven, combine the turnip greens, ham hock, water, onion, garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  3. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 hours, or until the greens are tender and the ham hock is falling apart.
  4. Remove the ham hock from the pot. Let it cool slightly, then shred the meat and return it to the pot.
  5. Stir in the apple cider vinegar and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Simmer for another 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  7. Serve hot with cornbread or your favorite Southern sides.

Notes

For a vegetarian option, omit the ham hock and use vegetable broth instead of water. Add a teaspoon of smoked paprika for a smoky flavor.
