Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Red and pink colored icing or sprinkles for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract if using.
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.
  6. Add buttermilk one tablespoon at a time until the dough is soft but not too sticky.
  7. Roll out dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness.
  8. Cut into heart shapes using a cookie cutter and place on prepared baking sheets about 1 inch apart.
  9. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are just starting to brown.
  10. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  11. Decorate with red and pink icing or sprinkles as desired.

Notes

For extra flavor, chill the dough for an hour before rolling out; this helps prevent spreading and enhances the texture.
